Little Sandy Prison Overview

Little Sandy Correctional Complex is operated by the Kentucky Department of Corrections as an adult state prison in Elliott County. DOC describes the prison as a Level IV institution and as medium/maximum security. The facility opened in 2005, first received female inmates in May 2005, began receiving male inmates on July 15, 2005, and became an all-male population by September 2005. Its population is sentenced Kentucky DOC custody, not pretrial county-jail custody.

The official facility narrative says the original prison had two living units holding 832 inmates, a 100-bed Minimum Security Unit, and a 118-bed Special Management Unit. Phase II expansion added two housing units and increased inmate population capacity from 1,050 to 1,882, with first inmates for the new construction arriving October 15, 2025.

Use Kentucky Online Offender Lookup for Little Sandy Correctional Complex inmates. KOOL is the statewide DOC search system. It is not a same-day Elliott County jail roster. LSCC visiting information gives housing-unit schedules, approved visitor rules, Securus video visit instructions, ID rules, dress code, and parking rules. In-person visits are scheduled and approved, last two hours, and are limited to four visits per month. Little Sandy intake is not county booking. A person arrives at LSCC after DOC classification and transfer, not just because the person was arrested in Elliott County. LSCC inmate programs are unusually detailed in official sources. DOC lists MRT Anger Management, Moral Reconation Therapy, Parenting, Staying Quit, Thinking for Good, Trauma, Employment, Untangling Relationships, PORTAL New Direction, substance-abuse programming, GED, adult basic education, literacy, carpentry, CT Fundamentals, horticulture, In2Work, NCRC, Small Engine Technology, associate degrees, bachelor's-level study, and master's-level study.

The prison also runs New Leash on Life with the Menifee County Animal Shelter. DOC says the program began in October 2008, places up to 10 dogs with selected inmate handlers for obedience and socialization, and has been responsible for more than 360 successful adoptions.

Programs do not prove custody status, but they help explain the facility's role as a state prison rather than a county holding site.

Directions to Little Sandy

DOC driving directions route Lexington traffic east on I-64 to exit 137 toward Morehead, then through KY-32, US-60, KY-32 South, KY-7, and the prison connector across from KY-504. From Ashland, DOC routes drivers west on I-64 to exit 172 toward Grayson, then left on KY-7 for about 18 miles and left across from KY-504. The official directions do not list public transit, so visitors should confirm route and timing with the institution.

Visitor parking rules are specific. Visitors are responsible for rolling up windows, locking doors, locking the trunk, and closing or locking the sunroof. Failure to secure a vehicle can terminate the visit for that day.

Little Sandy Standards

DOC reports that Little Sandy Correctional Complex is ACA-accredited. The official facility page says LSCC received initial ACA accreditation on August 13, 2007 with 100 percent compliance, was reaccredited July 13, 2013 with 100 percent compliance, and was reaccredited again in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Accreditation does not answer whether a specific person is in custody, but it is part of the facility's public operating record.

Kentucky jail standards should not be blended into LSCC operations without care. County jail standards are tied to laws such as KRS 441.055 and 501 KAR jail regulations. LSCC is a DOC state prison, so DOC facility rules, KOOL records, prison visitation approval, and DOC open-records channels are the better references for someone housed at Little Sandy.

Little Sandy Visitor Limits

LSCC visitor rules include more than a schedule. Non-contact visits require a prior written appointment at least seven days in advance. Non-contact visits allow no more than two adult visitors, while contact visits allow no more than three adult visitors. Visitors may not visit more than one inmate unless the warden or a designee authorizes it. The institution is tobacco-free, and tobacco is prohibited during visits.

The dress code calls for modest clothing that fits a correctional setting. Undergarments must be worn and not visible. Shirts must cover shoulders, cleavage, and midriff. Footwear is required. The prohibited list includes revealing, see-through, excessively tight, gang-related, offensive, tank, halter, tube, sleeveless, and certain short clothing. Smart watches are prohibited under the allowed-items rules.
